Reviews:
" I'd rate it at around 3.5 to 4 out of five, as it's pretty comprehensive and takes a fresh look at some bits not usually covered by Director books (e.g. digital video).
The book is aimed at intermediate and wannabe advanced, taking over from the manuals. This isn't a Peter Small type brainbender. It takes a much more commercial line than originally intended but there are enough gems in there to keep most folks satisfied. It's just that the price is a bit steep even if the ROM has some good stuff on it.
NOTE WELL that I'm extremely biased as I wrote the Digital Video chapter!"(Matt Davis 34.9.96)

Title: Lingo!: An Advanced Guide To Director's Scripting Language
Publisher: New Riders / Macmillan Computer Publishing
Author: Tab Julius
User level: Accomplished - Expert for Mac & Win 4.0 & 5.0
ISBN: 1-56205-592-5
Pages: 450pg book w/ companion CD-ROM
Price: 41.99 NET UK

Review:
"The cover caption says "advanced" but it's more like intermediate really. Not for beginners, but if you know the basics of lingo and want to find out more about when and how to use global variables, puppets, etc. to the best effect and write flexible streamlined scripts, then this is a good place to look.
It kind of takes of where "lingo workshop" ends (except for the object orientated stuff at the back of LW). It also has a little bit on shockwave.
Comes with a CD (containing examples, a demo version of director and some Xtras) and covers both Director 4 and 5."(Alec East 5.9.96)

Reviews;
" a good book for beginner to intermmediate level but not, as it claims on the sleeve, "the complete resource to lingo scripting",the book contains a well written series of lessons (backed up on CD) and attempts ,briefly, to cover object oriented programming in one chapter (unsuccesfully). I would like to have seen a explanation of 'why' as well as just 'how' to do a certain routine eg; more on the theory and practical use of lists and arrays." (simon crab 2.9.96)

"A must." (Bassem Abdallah 3.9.96)

Title:Shockwave Studio - Designing Multimedia for the web
Author: Bob Schmit.
This review comes from the perspective of a designer rather than a programmer, Someone who would rather deal with pictures than numbers and generally approached lingo books with a feeling of trepedation and a deep sigh. Many a time I've been frustrated by the "programmer speak" in suchbooks, I don't speak "programmer" and don't really want to, I just want to know how to get A to do B, while C does something funky, and make it all look pretty darned good whilst its doing it too please. I've battled with various lingo tutorials and generally, I've ended up giving up and goingback to using he good ol' score to get the job done. This one however, actually seems to be aiming vaguely in my direction.Although, I have used director for animation extensively for quite sometime now, I have managed to avoid writing lingo any more advanced than the popping of a couple of global variables here and the odd list there. Thats the level I'm at, and that's the sort of level this book aims at. This book isn't intended to be the definitive guide to lingo and director, and its not. Its probably best used in conjunction with the manuals and lingo dictionaries and if its someting really smart you want to be doing, its probably also helpful to be sat next to a friendly programmer. But, if its a step by step introduction to some cool things you can do with shockwave, that you're after, along with a history of the product straightfrom its creator, and a whole load of "tips n' tricks" backed up by director examples (shown in print and also a few examples on CD) then this is a pretty good starting point. Because designing with shockwave isn't just about using Director, this book features stuff you really need to know for creating shockwave work for the web , from ways of reducing the sizes of your files, to sorting out your palettes so the colours don't all screw up as soon as you play your file on a different browser, to"seemlessly" integrating your movies into your pages (well as seemlessly as you're gonna get at this point in time anyway) There's even a section on uploading your files, a rather fundamental point that would probably come in handy if no one has let you in on the secret just yet (other books always seem to assume that someone has). With the arrival of streaming sound on the scene, it is very useful that the whole of chapter 11 is devoted to sound compression, streaming and top tips. So if it's a buzzing, clicking, singing, streaming, (really annoying?!) app, you're aiming for then this is a pretty comprehensive guide to how to go about it. Although,I was expecting more on this particular subject to be found on the CD andwas disappointed by the lack of examples. I'd summarize by saying that if you design for the web, have used Director before but aren't a lingo guru, and you want to know how to do some jazzy things using Shockwave without ending up headbutting your monitor in frustration, if you want smaller faster files and basically want to get to grips with shockwave as a medium, then this is a pretty good place to start reading.
